FUSD High Schools Compete in Academic Decathlon

Students from A.B. Miller, Fontana, Jurupa Hills, Kaiser, and Summit High Schools were among the 500 students competing in the 28th annual San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon on Saturdays, January 29 and February 5.  The scholastic competition pitted a record 52 teams of students from 29 local high schools against one another in 10 academic disciplines.  Teams and individual students were recognized with certificates, trophies and gold, silver or bronze medals at the awards ceremony on February 10.  Among those honored was Fontana High School's Academic Decathlon Team which placed ninth overall in the competition and Kaiser High School's Decathlon Team which came in second place for the Super Quiz.

This year's theme, "The Great Depression," provided a challenge, powerful academic growth, and tremendous rewards for the students involved.  Like the Decathlon of the ancient Greeks, the San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon consists of ten exacting and exciting competitions.  But, while the Greek events were contests of physical strength, the San Bernardino County event is a test of academic strength and endurance.  Teams are composed of nine students, three from each of the grade point categories of “A” (Honors), “B” (Scholastic), and “C” (Varsity).  There were written tests in the areas of math, economics, science, language/literature, music, art and social science.  Students wrote an essay, faced a panel of interviewers and gave impromptu and prepared speeches.  For the finale, teams competed in a Super Quiz, a college bowl-style event consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions.  In the Super Quiz, Redlands took first place, followed by Kaiser in second and a tie for third between Chino Hills and Montclair.

Redlands High School won first place for a record 13th county title and will represent the county at the statewide Academic Decathlon competition on March 11-14, 2011 in Sacramento.

Fontana Unified School District was proud to have teams from each of our comprehensive high schools participate in the Academic Decathlon.  Congratulations to all our FUSD Academic Decathlon teams and coaches!
