At the July 14, 2010 Board of Education Meeting, Chief Bob
Ratcliffe presented information to the Board about
Fontana's newest intervention program.
The Fontana Unified School District, in conjunction with the
Fontana Police Department, is launching the Fontana Leadership
Intervention Program (FLIP). By using a triad-approach of
education, leadership, and self-actualization, FLIP's mission is
to bring about a lasting, life-altering, and positive change in
the attitude and behavior of the students participating in the
program. The program will provide an education rich
environment dedicated to building the next generation of
community leaders.
FLIP is a 16-week program in which students meet for 8-hours
a day on consecutive Saturdays. Daily class schedule
includes
physical training, class instruction and group discussion
on a variety of topics, including gang intervention, drug
intervention, ethics, teamwork, leadership, traffic safety,
financial responsibility, health and safety, lifetime fitness,
cultural awareness, and anger management. Guest speakers
will include Superior Court Judges, San Bernardino County Deputy
District Attorneys and Public Defenders, California Highway
Patrol, local Firefighters, Military Recruiters, Probation and
Parole, and Community Leaders. As part of the program,
students will take field trips to place such as the Museum of
Tolerance, colleges, California Speedway, County Coroner's
Office, West Valley Detention Center, and Youth Authority Camp.
Students are accepted into the FLIP program on a referral
basis initiated by Child Welfare and Attendance, School Resource
Officer, School Site Administrator, Probation Officer or by
Court order. While in the program, students are required
to check-in daily with School Resource Officer and participate
in weekly student progress reports and parent evaluations,
random drug and alcohol screening, periodic home visits,
physical fitness standards, community services projects,
classroom participation/homework, attendance standards, and have
a respectful attitude and behavior.
Upon completion of the FLIP program, there will be a formal
academy graduation ceremony with a keynote speaker, awards and
certificates. High school students who successfully
complete the FLIP Program will earn five elective credits toward
graduation.
At the end of his presentation, Chief Bob introduced David Munguia, an 11th grade student
at Fontana High School, who was the winner of the FLIP Logo Contest.
David's winning logo will appear on all the FLIP program
brochures and other printed materials. Congratulations, David!
