Steve Hickey Named New Athletic Director of Summit
At the June 29, 2011 meeting of the Fontana Unified School District Board of Education, the Board approved Steve Hickey as the new Athletic Director of Summit High School.
Mr. Hickey was born and raised in Fontana and is a graduate of the Fohi Class of 1988. During high school, he was a two-year starter and key member of the Steelers’ first Citrus Belt League title-winning team during the 1986-87 season. During his senior year, Ed Kearby, took over as the Fohi’s basketball coach and that same year Mr. Hickey was named first-team all-CBL.
After graduating from Fohi, Mr. Hickey attended Cal State San Bernardino, where he was a four-year team member and three-year starter for the Coyotes, while he majored in physical education. As a senior, he led the Coyotes in scoring and rebounding and was named All-California Collegiate Athletic Association in the school’s first season at the NCAA Division II level. By graduation, he was the school’s No. 2 career rebounder, and in the top 10 in scoring and assists.
Mr. Hickey moved to Colorado and worked three years as a high school assistant coach before moving back to the Inland Empire and working as an assistant coach at San Bernardino Valley College under his old high school basketball coach, Mr. Kearby.
After working in San Bernardino for a couple of years, Mr. Hickey returned to his home town and taught special ed. for a year and ELD classes for two years before becoming a full-time PE teacher and basketball coach at Kaiser High School when it opened in 1999. He had the opportunity to build a second consecutive basketball program from scratch when he transferred to Summit High School in 2006. After taking the Summit High School Boys Basketball team all the way to the CIF Division II State finals this year, Mr. Hickey was named the All-Sun Coach of the Year.
Mr. Hickey will fill the Summit High Athletic Director position left vacant when Ed Kearby takes over as Assistant Principal at Kaiser High School in the new school year. “I am excited to be able to help continue the excellent achievements, both academically and athletically, here at Summit,” said Mr. Hickey.
