On Saturday, May 14, 2011, approximately 395 elementary and middle school
students from the Fontana Unified School District demonstrated their
mathematical skills as part of the District's 47th annual Math Field Day
competition. Sequoia Middle School regained the winning trophy from Ruble
for the 7th and 8th Grade Division. For the individual divisions, Southridge took first place for the 6th Grade, Oleander took first for 5th Grade
for the third straight year and Hemlock took first for 4th Grade.
Teams of 4th through 8th grade students participated by
taking part in several different math tests and strategy games. The tests
included terminology, problem solving, estimation skills, calculator skills,
mental mathematics, basic skills arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry.
Five mathematically-based strategy games were played in a tournament-like
competition, including five-in-a-row, hex, capture, Mancala, and triplets.
Students were awarded medals for first through fourth places. Points
were then awarded, based on individual student performance, with schools
competing for overall first through fourth places.
Math Field Day promotes the importance of mathematics, while
emphasizing the fun that students can experience by participating in the
competition. FUSD's Math Field Day competition is named after the late
Charles Pine. Mr. Pine taught math at Fontana High School for over 22
years and was the leading force behind the Math Field Day event.
