At the May 4, 2011 Board Meeting, the Board of Education recognized Kerry Long of Dorothy Grant Elementary School, our District’s most recent teacher to become a National Board Certified Teacher.
“This is the highest honor in the teaching profession,” explained Miki McCabe Inbody, FUSD’s Director of Staff Development. “It is recognition of accomplished teaching of content knowledge and teaching pedagogy.”
National Board Certified Teachers are highly accomplished educators who meet high and rigorous standards. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.
The National Board Certification process is a voluntary process established by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Certification is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes between one and three years to complete.
In a congressionally-mandated study, National Board Certification was recently recognized by the National Research Council as having a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention, and professional development. “To become a National Board Certified is an accomplishment worth taking,” explained Ms. Inbody, “and the gains made in student learning are phenomenal from our teachers who are National Board Certified.”
