At the February 2, 2011 Board Meeting, Oak Park Elementary School was
recognized for hitting the 800 mark on the Academic Performance Index (API).
Antonio Viramontes said "As Principal of Oak Park Elementary School, it is my honor to have our school recognized for our API of 806 and, for the first time, being an “800 School.” This goal wasn’t accomplished by just one person or one group, it was a complete team effort on my campus. From our teachers who are always working hard with their students
- inside and outside of the class - to our classified employees who are working and supporting our teachers in the office and
cafeteria workers making sure that our kids have a hot breakfast and giving them a good sound lunch."
Mr. Viramontes credits much of the school's success to their increased
emphasis on student interventions. "Last year we worked with our interventions and having our instructional support teacher working with students and facilitating the intervention for our students and teachers has been a great addition to our goals.
Our teachers are great teachers. They work, keeping the fidelity of the
core program and looking at what interventions our kids need. Last year we did
take a strong look at our intervention and see what specific interventions can
we do for our students that are supported by our data./font>"
He also gave a shout-out to the Oak Park parents for their support. "We can’t forget our PTA parents who have been working very hard,"
said Mr. Viramontes. "Our PTA is small but very strong. One of the goals that they helped us do is building a computer lab for our school, so they have been really working hard. Also, to our parents who their job was to get their students to school every single day and having them be there, ready to learn."
"Last year was a great year for us," continued Mr. Viramontes. "All
those combinations really helped bring everything together for our students
.
It was a partnership between staff, parents, and everyone involved to make Oak Park over the 800 mark for the first time and
an '800 School'.”
