Read Across America Gets Early Start at Juniper
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”
- Dr. Seuss
Students at Juniper Elementary School got a head start on celebrating the ninth annual Read Across America Day when faculty and student representatives from Chaffey Community College visited them on February 25.
To honor Dr. Seuss, the Chaffey faculty and staff and special guest Fontana Police Chief Rodney Jones went into classrooms to talk to the students about the fun and value of reading and to read to them.
As a No Excuse University school, Juniper is doing what they can to get kids
thinking about college while
they are still in elementary
school. Each classroom has been adopted by a college and earlier this year, Chaffey College adopted the entire school. “We were contacted by Chaffey College at the beginning of the year because they wanted to adopt a Fontana school and our school came to my mind since they had already adopted one of our first grade classrooms as a part of our No Excuse University," said Principal Adele Thomas. “Chaffey College offered to celebrate Dr. Suess' Birthday with us and brought students, staff, and faculty to read to each of our classrooms.”
Susan
Stewart, Director of Student
Activities at Chaffey College,
said that the school collected over 800 books through their campus clubs as well as
through individual employee and
student so that each child at Juniper could have a new book of their own.
NEA’s Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on
Dr. Seuss' Birthday, March 2nd. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books
to promote reading.
