FUSD Board Adopts Resolutions Honoring Mayor and City Council Member


At their December 8, 2010 meeting, the Fontana Unified School District Board of Education adopted resolutions honoring Mayor Frank Scialdone and City Council Member Janice Rutherford for their service to the City of Fontana.

Fontana Mayor Frank Scialdone’s community involvement has included:

  • Fontana Unified School District member and chairperson of the Ethnic and Boundary Review Committee – 1979 to 1982;
  • American Red Cross, Inland Empire East Chapter Board Member (Chairperson of the Personnel and Long Range Planning Committees) – 1983 through 1996;
  • Fontana High School Band Boosters President and Board Member – 1988 through 1994;
  • Central Valley Fire District Fire Commissioner and Board Member – 1989 through 1992;
  • School Police Committee Member – 1994 through 1995;
  • Boys and Girls Club of Fontana Board Member – 1996 to Present;
  • Fontana Special Olympics Volunteer – 1996 to Present;
  • Announcer for the City’s annual Fontana Days and Christmas parades – 1997 to Present;
  • City of Fontana Advanced Community and Education Services Project (ACES) Steering Committee Member – July 2004 to Present; 

Mayor Scialdone developed the School Resource Officer partnership with FUSD to support middle school students as well as other programs to support students such as Cops and Jocks, the After School Activities Program (ASAP), Police Explorer Academy, and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

Janice Rutherford has served as a member of the Fontana City Council since her election in 2000; under her leadership Fontana has invested in its infrastructure, attracted new jobs and businesses, opened a new theater, library, parks and aquatics center.

She works for the Acting Member of the State Board of Equalization as a Taxpayer Advocate/Liaison and does Public Affairs work, and previously worked with Bill Leonard on the Board in addition to serving as his Chief of Staff in the State Senate and State Assembly.

Ms. Rutherford is a member of Fontana’s Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the Fontana Boys and Girls Club, served on the Chaffey College Foundation Board of Directors and the advisory board for the School of Business and Public Administration at Cal State San Bernardino and is a member of the Board of Junior Statesmen of America.

She is the Inland Empire’s representative to the State Board of Directors for the California League of Cities and served three years as President of the League’s Inland Empire Division.

Ms. Rutherford has been recognized as the 63rd Assembly District’s Woman of the Year, a Woman of Distinction by the West End YWCA, Chaffey College’s Alumni of the Year, and received the National Medallion from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
