FUSD Honors Scholar Athletes for Fall Season

At their December 8, 2010 meeting, the Fontana Unified School District honored the Scholar Athletes from each of our five high schools for the fall season. “Not only are these students talented in their athletic ability," said Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks, "but they are talented in their academic ability and that is truly exciting.”

"With the conclusion of the fall athletic season and the winter athletic season near its start, we would like to take this time to recognize the achievements of our fall sports," said Kimberly MacKinney, Director of Secondary Education. "During the fall season, we had 27 varsity teams in seven sports serving 1,367 students in the Fontana Unified School District. Their collective GPA was 2.86 during their sport season with 650 of those students (or 48%) earning above a 3.0. There were 123 students who were below a 2.0 and we are doing remediation for those students to get them back on track."

At Fohi the overall GPA for their athletes was a 2.58, with the Girls’ Volleyball team having the highest GPA out of all their sports of 2.69. At Jurupa Hills, the overall GPA was a 2.79 with the Girls’ Tennis team having the highest GPA of all their sports with a 2.94. At Kaiser the overall GPA was a 2.96 and the Girls’ Tennis team also had the highest GPA of all their sports with a 3.5. At Miller the overall GPA was 3.04 and the Girls’ Volleyball team having the highest GPA of all their sports with a 3.29. And lastly at Summit the overall GPA was a 2.99 with their Boys’ Water Polo team having the highest GPA of all their sports with a 3.3. Of all of our schools, Miller had the highest GPA for their Fall Athletes with a 3.04 and Kaiser’s Girls’ Tennis team had the highest GPA with a 3.5.

Each of the three athletic leagues that Fontana is a part of recognize the athletic achievements of our student athletes through a scholar athlete program. Varsity athletes who earn a 3.5 GPA or higher during their season of sport are identified as Scholar Athletes.
