On Saturday, February 5, 2011, eleven Fontana High School Woodworking students participated in the Region 6 contest of California SkillsUSA
and they each brought home a gold medal for their excellent
performances.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. Each year, SkillsUSA students are given the chance to prove their abilities and training at competitions in eighty specialty areas at the local, regional, state, and national levels. California SkillsUSA’s Region 6 includes students from San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego counties.
The eleven Fohi Woodworking students competed in two contest areas against students from five other Southern California high schools. In the Cabinetmaking contest, students were required to construct a cabinet face frame, edge-trimmed cabinet top, and frame-and-panel door. For the Introductory Woodworking Contest, students constructed a tool tote. All student projects were submitted to a panel of industry experts for judging.
Medals were awarded to the highest-scoring students in a ceremony conducted at Universal Technical Institute in Rancho Cucamonga. In the Cabinetmaking Contest, Matthew Ayala, Carlos Rubio, Omar Cardenas, Alex
Patino, Baldemar Perez Martinez, Christian Cabrera, and Angel Macedo won Gold Medals In the Introductory Woodworking Contest; Jacob Lopez, Amy Villegas-Romero, Stephanie Fierro Brown, and Lake Salazar all took home Gold Medals. Fohi Cabinetmaking competitors recorded seven of the eight highest scores in the contest and every one of our contestants won a Gold Medal.
All of these students have qualified to compete against the best Woodworking students in California at the 44th Annual State Leadership Conference and
Championships to be held at the San Diego Town and Country Resort on April 28-May 1, 2011.
