Dear Fontana Community,
Another school year has come to a close and with the summer break come opportunities for families to create those special experiences that are so essential to a child’s cognitive and emotional development. Simple activities can become a foundation for learning to read and working cooperatively with others, essential building blocks for academic achievement when they come back to school.
It can be challenging for busy families to carve out time away from work, especially in these difficult economic times. The City of Fontana offers a variety of opportunities that are close to home and most are free or low-cost, family-friendly events. Learning, disguised as fun, can keep a child’s mind stimulated during the “lazy days” of summer.
- It’s summer and too hot to travel – what should you do? The Lewis Library and Technology Center is offering a fun-filled celebration of reading fit for the whole family and the best part is you will get to show off your reading skills while earning incentives.

- Movie Mondays are coming to a park near you! Starting June 13 at 6 pm, the City of Fontana will set-up their outdoor movie theatre for all to enjoy. Every week is a different park and a different movie. Don’t forget the popcorn!
- Beginning Wednesday, June 15, is Family Fun Nights with themed activities and entertainment celebrating different styles of music. The fun starts at 5pm. The City will provide the music and you bring your best robot dance!
- Moonwalk your way to the melody filled lineup of the Sunset Concert Series every Thursday evening at 7 pm from June 9 to July 28 at Veterans Park.
- “Rap” up your week with Dive-In Movies on Fridays starting June 17 at Heritage Pool. Enjoy swimming and a movie during those warm summer nights! Event runs from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
- Improve your freestyle technique at the Don Day, Fontana Park, Heritage and Miller pools as they warm up for summer activities. Swim lessons are a huge part of summer fun and summer safety and it is important for everyone to know the basics of swimming and pool safety. Stop by any of the four City pools to sign up and remember pools open May 28!
- Brush up on your interpretive dance skills because there are three exciting Fontana Arts events planned for this summer: Art in the Park on June 18, Sounds From the Islands on June 25, and Fontana Arts Festival on July 30. All events are free and bring together artists, performers and food vendors from all over the area to share their passion of art, music and community!
- On July Fourth, the City of Fontana along with the Auto Club Speedway and KFROG will host the annual
Red, White and Cruise event at the Auto Club Speedway. This year’s activities include Stars & Pipes Motorcycle Ride, Car Cruise & Show, local vendors, carnival and children’s zone, live music, and will feature a spectacular fireworks show. Pre-sale tickets will be available starting June 6 to July 2, and are $7.00 per person for Fontana residents. Children age 6 and under are free.

I also want to take this opportunity to remind you that the District is once again a site for the Summer Food Program. This program, which will be in operation June 7 through July 15, offers free food to the children and youth of our community (children 18 years and younger). Lunch is served from 10 am to 11 am, Monday through Friday at A.B. Miller, Fontana, Kaiser and Summit High Schools. The Summer Food Program is also available at parks and recreation centers throughout the community through July 29.

Next year will bring a new set of challenges, primarily making do with much less – less money and less staff – but also, with our ongoing efforts to improve student achievement. But for now, it’s time for a well-deserved rest. Best wishes to all of you for a safe, relaxing, and fun-filled summer break.
We look forward to welcoming back all students for the new school year on Monday, August 8, 2011.
Best Wishes,
Cali L. Olsen-Binks
Superintendent
