FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Fontana Unified School District Announces New Superintendent
The Fontana Unified School District Board of Education announced today their selection of Debra A. Bradley, Ed.D as Fontana's new Superintendent of Schools.
For the past seven years, Dr. Bradley has served as the Superintendent of the
Lompoc Unified School District, where she previously served as Associate Superintendent and as principal at Cabrillo High School. She received her doctorate from USC in 1987. She began her career as a teacher in the Bonita and Glendale Unified School Districts.
As part of the superintendent search process, two Board members, Board President Dr. D. Wayne Ruble and Mrs. Laura Mancha, visited Lompoc and spoke with Lompoc Board members, staff, parents, and community officials including the mayor.
Speaking today, Dr. Ruble said, "Dr. Bradley brings a great deal of experience, and she's a strong supporter of students. She's known for her close working relationships with parents and staff, including employee associations, and with city and community officials. She has been, and will be a very active participant in community activities. She was the Board's top choice, and I'm looking forward to an outstanding year."
In Lompoc, Dr. Bradley's partnership with the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce led to a Golden Bell Award in 2002 from the California School Boards Association in the School to Career category for the Youth Leadership Lompoc Valley program. Partnerships also led to a state of the art aquarium lab facility at one of Lompoc's high schools, a highly successful Even Start program, expanded K-12 classroom technology, the reinstatement of elementary music (using a school bus called the Music Express, refurbished with keyboard labs) and the provision of adult literacy and technology training through a Community Literacy Bus.
California Academic Performance Index reports show several high achieving schools in Lompoc Unified, with the majority of schools consistently meeting state growth targets.
Dr. Bradley will be introduced at the Board of Education meeting this Wednesday, July 9. Much as the Fontana Board did their research, Dr. Bradley is well aware of Fontana's schools and their accomplishments. "I hold Fontana's students, staff and parents in the highest regard for what they've achieved," she said, "and I'm proud that I'll now be a part of the Fontana Unified School District and this community."
Several schools in Lompoc use Focus on Achievement instructional materials developed in Fontana, and both districts have adopted successful research-based strategies developed in Brazosport, Texas, so Dr. Bradley arrives well aware of Fontana's instructional focus. "I want to emphasize how much I look forward to working with students, staff and the community," Dr. Bradley added. She took several first steps in community involvement by running in the recent Fontana Days 5K event, "wearing
#99," she said.
