Comprehensive Health Services
Fontana Unified School District employs 17 school
nurses (RNs) all of which possess Master’s Degrees in Nursing or a related
field. Seven are nurse practitioners with specialties in family health or
pediatric health care. There are also four Clinical Nurse Specialists. The Nurse
Practitioners perform physical examinations for CHDP, well child, acute care,
camp and sports entry. Additionally, they can conduct exams for specific problem
identification and referral. The RN’s can provide a wide range of services as
well, including but not limited to the following:
Administration of immunizations for
students/employees
- Hepatitis B Vaccine for employees: This
vaccine is available to FUSD employees who do not have coverage for the
vaccine under their health plan. Substitute employees may also receive this
vaccine at no charge. Employees may receive this vaccine on Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Immunizations: Available to all FUSD
students (2 months through 18 years old) and their siblings. Immunizations are
available daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No charge.
Administration of TB Skin Testing for
Students/Employees
- Employee TB Skin Testing: Provided for
all FUSD employees at no charge. Student workers are charged $2.00, and
pre-employment TB skin testing is $5.00. Testing is done Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesdays ONLY from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment.
- Volunteer Tuberculosis Skin Testing:
Provided for all FUSD enrolled Pre-School parent volunteers and their
Pre-school children at no charge. Volunteers for grades K-12 can receive a TB
skin test for $5.00. Testing is done Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays ONLY from
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment.
Adolescent Clinics
- Adolescent Clinics: Located at Fontana,
Kaiser and ABM High Schools. These clinics are available to any student at no
charge. Clinic occurs at Fohi, the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday morning. At
Kaiser High School clinic occurs on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday. Clinic at AB
Miller is available on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday morning. Parent consent is
required. Please call your high school health office for an appointment. Sport
participation exams are also available to all FUSD students interested in
participating in competitive sports. The exams are conducted at Fohi, AB
Miller and Kaiser High Schools. Exam dates are announced at the school site.
Though the exams are only required for High School sport participation, any
FUSD student may receive a sports exam in order to play sports outside the
district. Adolescent Clinics are available from September through July. No
clinics in August.
Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP)
- CHDP Physicals: School entry physical
exams are available for all FUSD students if they qualify by low income or if
they have regular Medi-Cal. By appointment only.
Health Counseling/Education and Health
Teaching
- Inservice training for new district
employees: Monthly in-service training for all new employees on Child
Abuse state mandated reporting. Monthly in-service training to issue the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued standards that can
protect staff from blood borne pathogens and methods of working together to
reduce the risk of contracting blood borne disease on the job.
- Staff Development: Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid training for district employees. Monthly
departmental staff development for Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Vocational
Nurses (LVN) and Health Assistants (HA), via educational inservices. This
includes but is not limited to: new hire training and orientation, medical
topics, national health alerts and staff educational requests. Health
education for district staff and students is available, both on an individual
basis and in the classroom. The department also has 39 Health Assistants who
maintain the school site Health Office performing first aid, maintaining
records and administering medication, under the indirect supervision of the
RN.
Health Screening:
- Mandated Screening: Vision, hearing, dental
and scoliosis screening of any student, particularly in the state recommended
grade level. Height and weight checks with plotting on a growth grid and
subsequent interpretation and counseling. Ongoing blood pressure screening of
students and employees.
Specialized Health Care Procedures:
- Individualized Student Health Plans:
These plans are developed by the RN and parents of children with special
health needs. The goal is to meet the health needs while at school. Included
are emergency plans and disaster plans.
- Specialized Health Care Procedures: If
a child has special health needs, such as requiring blood sugar testing at
school because of diabetes, or insulin administration, these services can be
provided. Other procedures might include but are not limited to
catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, tracheostomy suctioning, etc. The
department also includes six Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN’s) who perform or
monitor Specialized Health Care Procedures on students throughout the
district, under the direction of the RN.
