Special Services/Special Education

Fontana is a growing district and that is currently reflected in the continuing growth in special education. Currently we provide special education services to over 4,600 students ranging in age from 3 to 22. Decisions for placement and services are made by the IEP teams; students are placed in the least restrictive environment.

Support for teachers is provided through a variety of channels. Teachers attend site staff meetings and participate in site/district staff development. Support is provided by the aspiring leaders and coordinators individually, and in small or large groups.

Staff development is determined by input from staff interactions, needs assessments and legislation. Teachers have opportunities to attend conferences sponsored by professional organizations.

Special Education staff have budgets for instructional supplies specific to the curricular needs of students. We have been fortunate to purchase supplementary instructional materials to support the core curriculum and support the academic growth of the students. We anticipate that we will continue to build upon that in the future.

Each school site has a Student Intervention Team made up of general educators.  They collaborate to develop interventions that will assist students who are needing educational and/or behavioral support.  Each school also has a Special Education Review Team (SERT) that is a collaborative effort for all special education staff at that site to support each other in working with students.

If you have any questions regarding the Special Education program, please feel free to call our office (909) 357-5000 Ext. 7254.
