2004 State History Day


Congratulations to Fontana Unified School District's Diana Herrera of Sequoia Middle School.  Diana is one of the two San Bernardino County students who will represent California at National History Day June 13-17 at the University of Maryland.  More than 2000 students in grades 4-12 submitted 650 entries in the State History Day competition held April 30-May 2 in Sacramento.

Diana took first place at the California History Day competition for her Junior Individual Exhibit, "Dr. Livingstone, I Presume?"  The other San Bernardino County student is Allison Jones of Upland High School in Upland Unified.  Allison took first place for her Senior Individual Exhibit, "The United East India Company: The Economic Engine of the Dutch Golden Age."

Two other Fontana Unified School District projects were selected as runner-ups/alternates.  In addition, one Fontana Unified School District project received one of the state’s special awards for excellence that highlight achievement on special topics.


The two projects representing California at National History Day are:

  • Junior Individual Exhibit—Diana Herrara, Sequoia Middle School, Fontana Unified, “Dr. Livingstone I Presume?”
  • Senior Individual Exhibit—Allison Jones, Upland High School, Upland Unified, “The United East India Company: The Economic Engine of the Dutch Golden Age.”

The runner-ups/alternates for California at National History Day are:

  • Junior Individual Performance—Nora Hunter, Sequoia Middle School, Fontana Unified, “Dead, Off Course, Late, Sick: Pilgrims Perseverance.”
  • Senior Group Exhibit—Amanda York, Jessica Anderson and Christina Lugo, A.B. Miller High School, Fontana Unified, “The Incredible Journeys of Captain James Cook.”

Recipients of State History Day special awards are as follows:

  • Sharon Matsumoto Award for outstanding entry on the Japanese Internment—Junior Group Documentaries
  • Pablo Balderas, Jesus Torres, Aaron Molina, Yecenia Najera and Christopher Cabezudo, Truman Middle School, Fontana Unified, “Nightmare.”
