Approximately 200 students from nine school districts and two private schools
submitted 113 entries in the 16th annual San Bernardino
County History Day competition
held Saturday, March 26, at A.B. Miller High School.
Sequoia Middle School and Canyon Crest Elementary School had the most champions
in their respective divisions, with Sequoia earning seven titles in the junior division and Canyon Crest
winning four titles in the elementary division.
Also representing Fontana, Truman Middle School earned 3 titles and Almeria
Middle School earned 1 title in the junior division; and A.B. Miller High School
earned 4 titles in the senior division.
Students in the junior and senior divisions competed in five categories -
exhibits, performances, documentaries, research papers and Web sites - on topics
related to this year's theme, "Communication in History: The Key to
Understanding." Elementary students competed in a poster contest.
A panel of judges selected two county champions, a first runner-up and a
second runner-up in each category. Both champions are eligible to
represent San Bernardino County in the state competition on May 5-8 in San
Diego. The top two finishes at the state competition advance to the
nationals on June 12-16 in Maryland.
