Visual and Performing Arts
Course Offerings:
Art 1A, 1B 1010 & 1020Meets the University of California “F” requirement An introductory course which presents the fundamental elements of art through a variety of media. Emphasis is placed on student drawing and painting. The goal of the course is to give students a broad understanding of what art is and how it affects everyday life. A lab fee of $10.00, per semester is required. Art 2A, 2B 1030 & 1040Meets the University of California “F” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of B or better in Art 1A & 1B and Department Chair or Teacher approval. Intermediate Art builds on the fundamental skills learned in Art 1A & 1B. A greater emphasis will be placed on painting in watercolors and acrylics. Exploration of different artistic media will continue, including pen and ink, pastels and 3D sculpture. A lab fee of $10.00, per semester is required. May be repeated for credit. Art History 1080Meets the University of California “F” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of B or better in Art 1A and 1B, Grade of B or better in Freshmen and/or Sophomore English and Department Chair or Teacher approval. A course designed to help students develop the capacities for creative, sensitive and intelligent participation in the arts. Art is presented as a mirror of social, moral, religious, decorative, political, artistic, and functional considerations of the historical time in which it was created. Ceramics 1A, 1B 1090 & 1095Meets the University of California “F” requirement Provides students with an introduction to sculpture, and proper use of ceramic materials and an introduction to the theories and principles of the ceramic process. A lab fee of $10.00, per semester may be required. Ceramics 2C 1099Meets University of California “F” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of B or better in Ceramics 1A & 1B and Department Chair or Teacher approval. The focus for this class is on design principles, form and functions and firing techniques. This class is intended for students who want to focus on fine arts as a profession or in college. Highest class (2B) may be repeated for credit. A lab fee of $10.00, per semester may be required. Drama 1A, 1B 1116 & 1117Meets the University of California “F” requirement Introduces students to acting by performing assignments in class with an emphasis on voice development and promoting self-confidence. Within this scope, the basic elements of drama, stagecraft and acting are introduced. Opportunities for script writing will be provided. Drama 2A, 2B 1118 & 1119Meets the University of California “F” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of B or better in Drama I and teacher approval A continuation of Drama I, emphasis is on preparing and performing skits and dramatic scenes. This course advances the theoretical and practical lessons of Drama I and explores improvisation, directing, play writing, dramatic criticism, set construction, costuming, make-up and production/management techniques. Students will create written and pictorial portfolios. May be repeated for credit. Yearbook Production 1180Pre-requisite: B or better in English and teacher recommendation Enables students to learn the skills involved in producing a yearbook. Skills such as planning page layouts, writing copy, creating headlines and captions, cropping picture, using the computer and selling advertising, will be developed through this course. Such skills can help prepare students for work in any publishing field. After-school and some Saturday time may be required. May be repeated for credit. Marching Band 1157Meets the University of California “F” requirement · Fall semester, satisfies the PE graduation requirement. Pre-requisite: Director approval required. Students must possess the requisite knowledge and ability to play an instrument in a performing band. A performing musical group, which participates in related football activities, sports, rallies, high school and district programs, parades and music festivals. Periodic extra-curricular rehearsals may be necessary. May be repeated for credit. Orchestra 1155Meets the University of California “F” requirement Pre-requisite: Directors approval. Provides the performer with an ensemble experience that explores the music of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Reed, brass and percussion instruments will be included along with traditional string instruments. Students must have a basic knowledge of and ability in their chosen instruments. May be repeated for credit.
