Course Offerings:
Spanish 1 2210One Year 9, 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Communication in Spanish is the main focus of this course. Students will develop the receptive skills of listening and reading, and, to a lesser degree, the productive skills of speaking and writing. Students will be evaluated on their ability to use Spanish in practical, everyday circumstances. An appreciation of cultural differences is the goal of this course. Spanish 2 2220One Year 9, 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: C or better in Spanish 1 or the successful completion of the Competency Exam for Spanish 1 Communication in Spanish continues to be the main focus of this course. Students will expand the interpretive skills of listening and reading. Students will ask and answer questions, express needs, preferences, wants and opinions. Students will also learn how to interact appropriately in various social situations, demonstrating an understanding of cultural values. Spanish 3 2230One Year 9, 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: C or better in Spanish 2 or the successful completion of the Competency Exam for Spanish 2 Provides for increased mastery of all Spanish language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises. Broader topics of discussion, beyond everyday situations, will expand the students’ vocabulary and cultural awareness. Students will discuss literature, music, geography, art and history. Spanish 3 Native Speakers 2280 One Year 9, 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: Oral command of the Spanish language This is an entry-level course for students who already speak Spanish but who may not necessarily be able to read or write the language. Students will develop reading and writing skills and prepare for the Spanish 4 AP course. Spanish 4 Advanced Placement 2243 Spanish 4 Native Speakers AP 2281 One Year 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement. (If AP exam is taken and passed with a score of 3 or better, college credit may be earned.) Pre-requisite: C or better in Spanish 3, C or better in Spanish 3 for Native Speakers, or the successful completion of the Competency Exam for Spanish 3 Prepares students to take the Spanish Language Advanced Placement Exam in May. Aural and reading comprehension material is drawn from native sources, usually of a complex nature and from a wide range of subjects. Speaking and writing skills will demonstrate near native abilities. Spanish 5 Literature Advanced Placement 2253One Year 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement. (If AP exam is taken and passed with a score of 3 or better, college credit may be earned.) Pre-requisite: C or better in Spanish 4, C or better in Spanish 3 for Native Speakers, and department Chair approval. An academically demanding course designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Literature Exam in the spring. Students will read and analyze important works in Spanish Literature and they will polish their composition skills in critical analysis and interpretation. French 1 2010One Year 9, 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Provides students with an opportunity to learn and develop French language skills needed to converse at a basic level. Students will practice the receptive skills of listening and reading, as well as the productive skills of speaking and writing. Cultural characteristics will be discussed in order to provide students with insight into the French language and French-speaking people. French 2 2020One Year 10, 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of C or better in French 1 Further provides students with the opportunity to develop conversational skills in French. Topics of discussion will expand on those introduced in French I. Students will be exposed to additional cultural information, which will assist in developing appropriate social behaviors. French 3 2030One Year 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: grade of C or better in French 2 Students will develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing mastery of the French language through a variety of activities. A wide range of topics beyond everyday situations will expand the student’s vocabulary and cultural awareness. French 4 Advanced Placement 2043One Year 11, 12 Meets the University of California “E” requirement Pre-requisite: C or better in French 3 and Department Chair approval Provides students with the opportunity to expand all French language skills previously learned. Readings from French literature and current publications will be discussed and analyzed with regard to language structure and cross-cultural similarities and differences |
