Course Offerings:
Women’s Studies 5008Pre-requisite: must be a junior or senior student must have a 3.0 GPA or teacher approval. This one semester course is an exploration of women’s roles in American History from the 1700’s to the present. Students will study and analyze the experiences of women in America and their impact on the nation’s history and culture. Through a social science approach, utilizing literature, art, primary sources, family relations, and Internet research, students will establish links among historical, contemporary and personal events. You and The Law 5006This is a semester elective designed to provide practical information and problem solving opportunities that develop in students the knowledge and skills necessary for survival in our law-saturated society. The curriculum includes case studies, mock trials, role-plays, small group exercises, and visual analysis activities. The class is designed to promote in students, a willingness and capability to participate effectively in the legal and political systems as well as help them learn how to use the law to improve their lives. World Geography and Culture Honors 5011Meets the University of California “A” requirement Pre-requisite: Department Chair approval. This course will serve as a preparation course for those students desiring to pursue an Advanced Placement course of study in social studies. Students will explore physical, cultural and human geography through a rigorous course of study World History and Culture 5020Meets the University of California “A” requirement Students examine major turning points in the shaping of the modern world from the late eighteen-century to the present. The year begins with an introduction to current world issues and then continues with a focus on the expansion of the West and the growing interdependence of people and cultures throughout the world. World History Advanced Placement 5023Meets the University of California “A” requirement. (If AP exam is taken and passed with a score of 3 or better, college credit may be earned.) Prerequisite: Top 10% of class by academic GPA or Department Chair approval. This course traces the development of World History from the emergence of cities to the present, focusing on the period after 1000 A.D. U.S. History 5030Meets the University of California “A” requirement A survey course focused on the political, social and religious heritage of the United States of America from colonial times to the present. The diverse population trends, problems, and important events will be examined and analyzed. U.S. History Advanced Placement 5033Meets the University of California “A” requirement. (If AP exam is taken and passed with a score of 3 or better, college credit may be earned.) Prerequisite: grade of A or B in World History and Department Chair approval. Complete study of the history of the United States of America. For the most serious and dedicated students, the objective of the course is to prepare students to take and successfully pass the Advanced Placement Exam in U.S. History, in the spring. American Government 5040 Meets the University of California “A” requirement A course in which students apply knowledge gained in previous study to pursue a deeper understanding of the institutions of American Government. This course should be viewed as the culmination of civic literacy that prepares students to reflect on the responsibilities of citizenship, such as participating in community activities and voting in elections. American Government Advanced Placement 5043Meets the University of California “A” requirement Pre-requisite: Departmental Chair Approval Students will examine in depth six components of the American political system: 1.) Foundation of democratic government, 2.) Creation of the American Constitution, 3.) Political parties and American elections, 4.) Structure and powers of the federal government, 5.) State and local government affairs, and 6.) Foreign problems and perspectives. This course will prepare students for the American Government Advanced Placement exam. NOTE: Students may enroll in both American Government AP and Economics AP. Economics 5050Meets the University of California “G” requirement Students will deepen their understanding of economic theories and practices in the United States and the world. They will learn to make reasoned decisions concerning economic issues as citizens, workers, consumers, and business owners and managers. Economics Advanced Placement 5053Meets the University of California “G” requirement Pre-requisite: Department Chair approval A senior level, yearlong course designed to emphasize the study of both micro and macroeconomics as they relate to social and political theories and practices. Students will be prepared to take the Advanced Placement Exam in the spring. NOTE: Students may take both American Government AP and Economics AP.
