Dress Code
It is our intent that students be dressed and groomed in an
appropriate manner that will not interfere with, or detract from,
the school environment or disrupt the educational process.
Parents at Oleander Elementary have requested a student uniform
policy. After a parent survey was done, our school has adopted a
school uniform policy. The following are the options for students to
wear each day:
- White or Navy blue tops, polo shirts, or blouses
- Navy blue pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers, blue jeans are
acceptable
- Any Oleander Elementary t-shirts with school name or logo
This policy is voluntary but will be strongly encouraged for
2009-10. All school clothing regular or uniform type must adhere to
Board Policy #5132.
Pants/Shorts/Culottes/Skirts/Jumpers: Students may wear pants,
shorts, culottes, skirts, or jumpers. Sweat pants and blue jeans are
acceptable. Faded, stone washed, ripped, or torn jeans are not
acceptable. Pants must fit at the waist and must not be more than
one size too large. Overly baggy shorts or pants are not acceptable. If belts are worn, they must not be more than one size too large. Walking shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh length or longer. Jogging shorts or bicycle shorts are not acceptable. Legging and
tights are acceptable only under skirts, shorts, or culottes. Rubber
bands to tie pants at the ankles are not allowed.
Shirts/Blouses: Shirts and blouses may not have inappropriate
designs or writing (such as crude, vulgar, profane or sexually
suggestive, which display drug, alcohol or tobacco company
advertising, promotions and likenesses, or which advocate racial,
ethnic or religious prejudice). Students are encouraged to wear
shirts and blouses tucked into their pants, shorts, culottes, or
skirts. Oversized shirts or blouses that are too long are not
acceptable because they present a safety hazard when students are
playing. G-Unit, Southside, LA shirts are discouraged because they
promote a double meaning. See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter
tops, bare midriff’s, or spaghetti strap tops are not acceptable.
Sweaters/Sweatshirts/Jackets/Coats: Sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets,
and coats may be any style or color. Jackets and coats must not have
writing or pictures that are sexually suggestive, derogatory,
gang-related, insulting, or can be construed to have a “double
meaning” or which advocates the use of drugs or alcohol. Athletic
team jackets that display emblems that could become disruptive to
school operations and the educational process are not acceptable.
Shoes: Shoes must be worn at all times. They may be any color and
should be appropriate for school activities. Backless shoes,
backless sandals, sandals that expose toes, bedroom slippers,
moccasins, or high heels are not acceptable.
Hats/Caps: Hats must be free of writing and/or logos. Students will
remove hats and caps during flag ceremonies and inside the classroom
or buildings. Hats or caps may not be worn backwards. Students may
not trade or share hats and caps.
Makeup: Makeup, temporary hair color, etc should not be worn or
brought to school. This presents a safety hazard for students.
Special Comments: Dress or grooming by a student that violates the
District guidelines but is not expressly delineated within District
or school site regulations or that presents a health or safety
concern shall be considered and reviewed by the site administrators
in charge. Classroom or grade level special events and activities
will be announced prior to the special events, and students may wear
special clothes when they participate on these special days. Students may wear special clothes on picture days. Dress should be
suitable and comfortable for normal school activities.
Oleander Elementary prohibits the wearing of any hat, cap, shirt or jacket
displaying any sport logos.
