Important News for 2008-09 School Year

Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, all high schools in the Fontana Unified School District will start school in August.  A.B. Miller, Fontana, Kaiser, Summit, Birch and Citrus High Schools will all start school on August 11, 2008, and end on June 1, 2009.  The District wants you to know about this change now, so you can plan for summer vacations and activities in 2008.

By starting school on August 11, 2008:

  • Students will have one full week off at Thanksgiving (November 24-28, 2008)
  • Winter Break will be three weeks (December 22, 2008 to January 9, 2009)
  • There will be more instructional days before State and AP Testing
  • First semester ends the day Winter Break begins

There is no better place to learn than in Fontana Unified School District schools.  Our schools have a variety of academic and enrichment programs to provide your child with the best education.

California State law authorizes all school districts to provide for alternative school.  Section 585 of the Education Codes defines alternative school as a school or separate class group within a school.

Alternative Education Schools are designed to:

  • Maximize the opportunity for students to develop the positive value of self-reliance, initiative, kindness, spontaneity, resourcefulness, courage, creativity, responsibility, and joy.
  • Recognize that the best learning takes place when the student learns because of his desire to learn.
  • Maintain a learning situation maximizing student self-motivation and encouraging the student in his own time to follow his own interests.  These interests may be conceived by him totally and independently or may result in whole or in part from a presentation by his teacher of choices of learning projects.
  • Maximize the opportunity for the students, teacher, and parents to continuously react to the changing world, including but not limited to the community in which the school is located.

"In the event any parent, pupil or teacher is interested in further information concerning alternative schools, the county superintendent of schools, the administrative office of this district, and the principal's office in each attendance unit have copies of the law available for your information.  This law particularly authorizes interested persons to request the governing board of the district to establish alternative school programs in each district."
