 A Message From our Principal

It is a privilege and a pleasure to serve the Shadow Hills community. Shadow Hills Elementary has an admirable record in continuous educational improvement. With the goal of helping each student reach their potential, Shadow Hills has recorded 9 straight years of growth in both the API and AYP measures, meeting growth goals each year and in all areas.  We were selected as a Title I Achieving School in 2002-2003, and continue to meet the growth standards each year.  In October of 2005, we were selected as one of 20 schools statewide to be named a “Shining Star” school for our successful AB65 student intervention programs.  In the 2005-06 school year, we were chosen as a California Distinguished School, an honor bestowed on schools that meet the highest standards in California.  In 2007-08, California Business for Educational Excellence (CBEE) named Shadow Hills an “Honor Roll” school.  Our teachers are a well-trained and dedicated group, with 100% of the staff fully credentialed and certified under the requirements of No Child Left Behind.

Meeting educational growth goals is the result of teamwork that includes the school staff, the students, the parents, and the entire community. But meeting those goals is only a part of being a good school.  We also work hard to provide a safe and welcoming environment that values each child, one that respects each individual’s background, heritage, and individual skills and needs.  Only by caring about the whole child can we help our students develop into young adults ready to survive and thrive in the ever changing world that awaits them.

We invite you, as parents and community members, to become part of our school by volunteering your time and efforts toward both maintaining and improving our school.  We welcome parents interested in being PTA members, helping with school events, volunteering to supervise student recesses, helping teachers in the classes, and assisting in our school beautification projects.  Parents can help by listening as children read to them, acting as math or reading tutors, preparing projects for teachers, or helping the PTA organize fund-raisers, campus events or awards.  Parents can serve on school committees, such as the School Site Council (SSC), the PTA, and the English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC).

To maintain good communications, we hold regular “Coffee with the Principal” meetings for parents to discuss issues with the principal, as well as Parent Orientation, Family Nights, Parent Conferences, and Open House events to give parents a chance to gather as a community and discuss concerns and programs.  In addition, we send home regular notices about school events, school newsletters, and we use the marquee and school bulletin boards, doors and windows to post items of interest and importance to parents and community members.  Outside the office there is a table with an updated display of informational brochures about school and community events.

It is our intent to utilize the resources of Shadow Hills to support the education of all of our children, maximizing their potential and minimizing obstacles to help each child succeed to their capability.  Each year we examine performance data carefully, and re-write our comprehensive school plan to make optimum use of the precious resources available to make us the most effective school we can be.

As your principal, I will make every effort to keep you informed of our progress, updated on our concerns, and aware of the progress your children are making toward achieving state standards.  If you ever have a question or concern, please call to speak with me, drop by and visit, or email me at donafl@fusd.net.
