A Message From our Principal
Dear Wonderful Tokay Parents!
It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the new Principal of Tokay
Elementary. I am excited to be joining the exceptional and unique
educational community at Tokay. For the past five years I have worked as a
vice-principal and interim principal at the elementary and middle school levels,
Prior to working in school administration, I was a classroom teacher at both the
elementary and middle school, where I taught third, fourth, sixth, seventh and
eighth grades.
Tokay is an educational community with a
long-standing tradition of excellence. Throughout the years, a commitment
to providing students with the highest caliber instructional programs has been a
hallmark at Tokay. The high expectations for students are reflected in the
belief that opportunities that expand and broaden the scope of learning are
essential for all students.
I am honored to become part of the Tokay and Fontana
Unified School District’s educational community. We have earned the right
to be very proud of our school. I hope that you will feel welcome to visit
our school to observe students, teachers, support staff, parents and other
members of our community working together to provide the highest quality of
instruction and educational experiences for all of our students. I look
forward to meeting and communicating with all members of our school community.
I am extremely happy to be a Tokay Tiger!
Mr. Terry Abernathy
Principal, Tokay Elementary
School Description
Tokay Elementary School is one of twenty-nine elementary schools in the Fontana Unified School
District.
It is a single-track, year-round school serving
approximately 773 students in kindergarten through fifth
grade, and supports a state preschool program on its campus. Over the past several years, our student population has changed rapidly, and today Tokay Elementary School's student population is a rich mixture of
86.4% Hispanic, 6.2% African-American, 5.7% Caucasian, and 1.7% other
ethnic backgrounds. The proportion of children who speak English as a second language (30%)
is increasing, with 154 students who require primary language support to be successful.
Tokay Elementary
School enjoys the active support of its parents and other community members. There is an active PTA that raises funds to bolster such programs for our students as: field
trips, books for the school library, trophies and other awards, disaster supplies, Red Ribbon Week, and student scholarships.
The Mission of the school as adopted by the entire staff (teachers, administrators, classified, Site Council, etc.)
is: The community of Tokay Elementary School parents, students, and staff, are working together to
create a positive and supportive learning environment where students are challenged to fulfill their academic and personal potential.
In its efforts to achieve this Mission the school works closely with several community groups, the Fontana Teachers' Association,
the United Steelworkers Union Local 8599 (classified employees), the City
of Fontana (Parks and Recreations and Performing Arts Center), and the PTA.
