On May 21, 2005, the students in Christopher Lee's sophomore English class at
A.B. Miller High School held a fair at Seville Park to raise awareness about the
need for volunteerism. The fair entitled "Raising the Roof" featured a
wide variety of individual student projects that ranged in scope from local to
global: getting a section of sidewalk built in Fontana, raising awareness
about starvation in Ethiopia, and suicide prevention.
The event was coordinated by three students, Nora Jane Garcia, Denise Galindo
and Anabel Ontiveros. They organized their fellow students in setting-up
booths, as well as raising awareness through entertainment. According to
Anabel, they are "just a bunch of students trying to inspire through example."
Mr. Lee stated that his students deserve credit for their positive actions
and that they are setting an example for adults, as well as other students.
