Important News for 2008-09 School Year

Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, all high schools in the Fontana Unified School District will start school in August.  A.B. Miller, Fontana, Kaiser, Summit, Birch and Citrus High Schools will all start school on August 11, 2008, and end on June 1, 2009.  The District wants you to know about this change now, so you can plan for summer vacations and activities in 2008.

By starting school on August 11, 2008:

  • Students will have one full week off at Thanksgiving (November 24-28, 2008)
  • Winter Break will be three weeks (December 22, 2008 to January 9, 2009)
  • There will be more instructional days before State and AP Testing
  • First semester ends the last day of school before Winter Break

 A Message From Our Principal

My staff and I have spent an enormous amount of time this spring and summer furnishing the rest of the school and hiring new staff to assist with the addition of 12th grade.  Not only have we have added six advanced placement (AP) classes, but our elective line-up now includes automotive technology, virtual business, advanced choir, color guard, culinary arts, as well as an expanded drama program.  We will also be adding ceramics to our second semester elective lineup.  We are currently working on Regional Occupational Program (ROP) courses with an instructor already hired for computer aided drafting and Careers in Marketing and Retail Sales.  We are also searching for an instructor for Medical Front Office training.  We have added 28 additional teachers and one counselor.  Fifteen members of our new teaching staff came from other districts; the remainder were transfers from other schools within the Fontana Unified School District.  We are offering 3 Zero Period classes that start one hour before regular school starts.

Our counselors have instituted academic award ceremonies as well as criteria and guidelines for the California Scholarship Federation and other academic recognitions.

Band camp, ASB Leadership training, sports teams, yearbook camp, cheer camp, link crew and peer leadership are just a few of the activities that happened last summer and that continue as our year progresses.  One of the most important aspects of high school life is to ensure that everyone feels connected.  My staff and I have made every effort to try and help you to make that connection.  Students are encouraged to find an activity which they are passionate about, by connecting with the person or people who are involved with that activity. For example, we encourage our ninth grade students to participate with our “link crew”.  “Link Crew” is a group of older students whose function is to link our new students with the school.  With a fully dedicated staff, over 50 sports teams and 50 club offerings at Summit High School, I would like to think that we offer something for everyone.

Our mission is to educate each and every student to better prepare him or her for the world beyond Summit High School.  Our staff is here to see that happen, and it will happen with your support.
