Description
Harry S. Truman Middle School is a technologically supported middle school
opened September, 1996 with approximately 1100 students. The school is designed
with classrooms located in two villages. Each village contains several possible
grade level combinations. The family teams are clustered together and open onto
common learning courts. The other grade level teams are close-by. This
arrangement is the ultimate expression of cohesive middle school design as
exemplified by "Caught in the Middle." Not only does this design promote a
feeling of belonging for the students, the closeness and the connectedness of
the rooms allows for strong interdisciplinary instruction, cross-age teaching
and whole village learning opportunities. Although designed for the 21st
century, it delivers learning in a "country school" family setting. The entire
Truman Middle School administration, faculty, and support staff believe all
children can learn in a safe, educationally challenging, and culturally diverse
environment that cherishes the uniqueness of each child. Through modeling and a
variety of instructional strategies the faculty and staff will encourage and
nurture students to succeed, be their best, and be productive citizens of their
community.
Truman Middle School is one of eight middle schools in the Fontana Unified
School District. Over the past few years the student population in the district
has changed rapidly. Truman currently has a population of approximately
1172 students in grades 6-8. The students come from diverse backgrounds,
including 81.3% Hispanic, 10.1% White/Non-Hispanic, 5.7% African-American, 1.7%
Asian, and
1.2% Other ethnic backgrounds.
