What we do?
Counselors assist students by providing support and guidance to improve their school experience and contribution in the school community. Counselors are available to discuss personal concerns with students. If additional support is needed, students and parents may obtain professional referrals. Students have access to group counseling, and when appropriate, consultations with the school Nurse or school Psychologist. Counselors also make referrals to the Student Intervention Team (SIT), which is a team of education professionals that meet to assess individual student needs and to suggest interventions for student success. Counseling and support services include:
- Referrals to Student Intervention Team and for outside professional counseling
- Resource booklets available on a variety of teen issues
- Personal counseling and counseling group meetings
Counselors assist students with high school and post-secondary educational planning and programming to ensure that students graduate from Jurupa Hills High School well prepared for post-secondary education and career opportunities. In addition, Counselors help students in selecting coursework that supports their post-secondary choices, both educational and vocational. Counseling and support services include:
- High school course selection and planning
- Monitoring graduation status
- Referring and/or assigning students for tutoring
- Individual student and parent meetings for academic counseling
- Assigning students to CAHSEE and academic intervention Programs
- Orientation for incoming 9th grade students
- Assigning students to the incoming 9th grade Summer Spartan Academy
- Referrals for academic testing and alternative placement
Counselors assist students by providing counseling pertaining to post-secondary options, such as, vocational/career schools, college admissions, college entrance examinations, scholarships, financial aid and completion of college or vocation/career school applications. Counseling and support services include:
- Individual student and parent meetings for post-secondary planning
- College, Military, and Vocational/Career Resource
- College and Vocational/Career school letters of recommendation, secondary school reports, mid-year reports
- Assistance with College, Military, and Vocational/Career school research and selection
- GPA verification for scholarships and financial aid
- NCAA/NAIA qualification and registration assistance
- College and Vocational/Career school application assistance
- College, Military, and Vocational/Career Representative visitations
- College, Military, and Vocational/Career school resources in the Student/Parent Center
- ASVAB and SAT/ACT registration information and fee waivers
- College and Vocational/Career Fairs College Admissions Workshops
- UC/CSU and Community College application workshops
- Financial Aid workshops
- PSAT/PLAN interpretation meetings with students
Where you can find us?
The Counselors are conveniently located on the second floor of the Administration building, at the top of the stairs, which are accessed next to the main lobby. You may reach us by phone, e-mail, or in person. Routine questions or issues may be best addressed through phone or e-mail, as we may be in a meeting, classroom, or session, if you come in person without an appointment. If you would like to meet in person please call for an appointment so we can schedule enough time to meet with you, to properly address your child’s needs.
How do I see my Counselor?
Appointments to meet with the counselor can be scheduled directly via the following QR codes. Determine who is the counselor, using your device (phone, Ipad, etc.) scan the appropriate QR code and it will take you directly to the site. Please follow the instructions by completing the questions to schedule your appointment. You may type in the link found below each QR code to take you directly to the site and schedule your appointment as needed as well if that works better for you. Please see the flyer below:
For Parents and Guardians; you may reach us by phone, e-mail, or in person. Routine questions or issues may be best addressed through phone or e-mail, as we may be in a meeting, classroom, or session, if you come in person without an appointment. If you would like to meet in person please call for an appointment so we can schedule enough time to meet with you, to properly address your child’s needs. If you have a matter that is an emergency your Child’s Counselor, another Counselor, or and Administrator will meet with you right away to assist you.
For Students; you may come to Counseling Office (upstairs of the Administration building) to see us. Other routine questions or issues may be best addressed by going to Counseling Office before school, after school, or at lunch. Keep in mind your Counselor may not be available when you stop by because we may be in a meeting, classroom, or session. You can schedule an appointment and/or leave a message to see one of the Counselors by asking the Guidance Techs. You can also send us an e-mail with questions. As always, if you have a matter that is an emergency your Counselor, another Counselor, and/or an Administrator will meet with you right away to assist you.
Mission Statement and Beliefs
The mission of the JHHS Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive school guidance counseling program that addresses the academic, career development, and personal/social needs of all students.
Counselors are professional school advocates who provide school-wide support to assist in maximizing student potential and academic achievement. In a partnership with other educators, parents/guardians and the community, Counselors assist with the monitoring and facilitation of school-based support systems, including the school wide Pyramid of Interventions and Instruction, to ensure all students at JHHS have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills for success in their personal lives and in the community. The JHHS Counseling Team believes that:
- all students have access to a full-time credentialed Counselor with a Master’s degree or higher.
- all students’ special needs are considered when planning and implementing a school guidance counseling program.
- the Counseling team provides convenient access to a school guidance counselor.
- the Counseling program addresses student needs in regard to student academic, career, and personal/social development.
- all students shall have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive school guidance counseling program.
- all students have dignity and worth.
- the Counseling Program uses data to drive program development and evaluation and to identify those students who need additional support and/or intervention.
- the Counseling Program seeks input and critique from other school professionals, parent and community representatives through a school guidance counseling program Advisory Committee.
- the Counseling Program actively involves Student Support Team members to monitor students’ results.
- the Counseling Program is evaluated by an appropriate supervising professional on specified goals.
- the Counseling Program is based on specified goals as identified by the National Standard for School Counseling for all students.
- all Counselors at Jurupa Hills High School abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association.
