State Assessments:

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System was established on January 1, 2014. The CAASPP System replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. FUSD administers the following required CAASPP assessments: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (SBA), California Alternate Assessments (CAAs), and California Science Assessments. In addition, FUSD also administers the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) and Physical Fitness Test (PFT or FITNESSGRAM®), which both are state-mandated tests. The Assessment Department orders, distributes, and collects all materials for these tests. The California Department of Education (CDE) posts aggregated and disaggregated results for each assessment on its Web site. To further support use of these data, our department prepares and distributes score reports, and assists schools as they attempt to assign meaning to the results. Student reports are also mailed home to parents/guardians. Finally, we work with teachers and administrators to develop their understanding and meaningful use of state and federal accountability reports to monitor and improve instruction.

State and District Assessments:

Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) is an interim assessment administered three times (fall, winter, and spring) each year to students in kindergarten through 10th grade. Based on a Learning Continuum aligned with Common Core State Standards, MAP is a computer-adaptive assessment that identifies students’ instructional readiness to learn in reading, math, and language. It creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level - precisely measuring student progress and growth for each individual over the course of the year, as well as from year to year. For students in 3rd - 10th grades, MAP also predicts how well they will perform on the ACT and Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA). MAP data are used to better target instruction, identify students who may need intervention or enrichment, tailor supports to students based on their assessed needs, and gauge students’ college and career readiness.

Optional formative assessments, also supported by our department, are brief assessments used by teachers to gauge student understanding and skill level before, during, and/or after teaching a unit of study. Some assessments used are Common Core Units of Study, NWEA Skills Navigator, ELLA, and assessments produced through EADMS.
