Fontana Unified Schools Named to California Honor Roll
Dolores Huerta International Academy, Sierra Lakes Elementary and Dorothy Grant Elementary were named to the 2017-18 California Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap and producing strong results on state standardized tests.
The accolade – awarded by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) – is based on results of 2017 state standardized tests in math and English language arts (ELA).
All three Fontana Unified schools were named Star Schools, a category for high-performing schools that have significant populations of students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Each school will receive a banner and be recognized online as a model for other schools.
“Fontana Unified is committed to ensuring students of all backgrounds receive outstanding academic support and to providing opportunities for growth every year,” Fontana Unified Superintendent Randal S. Bassett said. “We are proud to receive Honor Roll designations for three of our schools.”
This is Grant Elementary’s seventh Honor Roll designation, and Sierra Lakes Elementary’s fifth consecutive award. Grant Elementary’s academic achievement and performance was also recognized by the state Department of Education, which named it a California Distinguished School this spring.
Dolores Huerta International Academy (DHIA), a dual-language magnet school that currently serves kindergarten through fourth-grade students, made the Honor Roll for the first time since it opened in 2016. At DHIA, 60 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in ELA, while 49 percent met or exceeded expectations in math.
Fontana Unified’s schools are among 1,798 public schools in California to be honored this year.
The Honor Roll is created by ERP, which analyzes 12 measures taken from California Department of Education data, including performance on state math, English language arts and science standardized tests. ERP looks at equity among students with differing ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.
