Fontana Unified Renames Chaparral Elementary School to Celebrate STEM Program
Chaparral Elementary has been renamed Chaparral Academy of Technology, reflecting the STEM-focused learning offered through the school’s Code to the Future program.
FONTANA, CA – Fontana Unified School District renamed Chaparral Elementary School as Chaparral Academy of Technology to celebrate its focus on fostering technological literacy and preparing students for the professional challenges of the future.
The K-5 school’s new name reflects the computer science immersion education students receive through Chaparral’s Code to the Future program. Chaparral hosts one of Fontana Unified’s two Code to the Future programs – which are the first two launched in the Inland Empire – and encompasses block coding, robotics and scripted coding skills.
“We’ve gotten a lot of compliments from the Code to the Future personnel and from our parents, teachers and students about how much they feel how Code to the Future has changed us for the better as a school community,” Chaparral Principal Dr. Andrea McClain said. “We are thrilled to move forward with a name that reflects what our school has to offer and fits with our vision for the future of Chaparral.”
Chaparral is the third Fontana Unified school to be renamed in 2018-19 to reflect its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. The new name was approved by Fontana Unified’s Board of Education during its June 5 meeting.
Chaparral formed a renaming committee of parents, students and staff to conduct research and come up with suitable names. The final name was selected from two options via a parent survey.
