Meet Amanda Colon, Principal of Locust
At the June 6, 2018 meeting of the FUSD Board of Education, the Board approved Amanda Colon as the new Principal of Locust Elementary School.
Mrs. Colon was born in Upland, California and grew-up in Murrieta. In fact, she was a member of the first graduating class of Murrieta Valley High School.
“My high school English teacher suggested that I consider teaching,” said Mrs. Colon. “She knew my parents were pushing me toward business (to make money) but she saw the qualities of an educator in me and asked me to think about it. When I did, I realized that I had always liked kids and helping people and so I decided I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher! This teacher, Ms. Davis and others really poured into me and helped shape me into the person I have become. I decided I wanted to have an opportunity to give back to others, especially kids, to tap into their strengths and support them in meeting their highest potential for greatness.”
Bolstered by their confidence in her, Mrs. Colon continued her education at Azusa Pacific University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and Cal State San Bernardino where she earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.
She embarked on her career in education at Berlyn Elementary School in Ontario Montclair School District where she taught 5th and 3rd grade.
“After much nudging and support from my principal, I decided that one day I wanted to pursue administration,” she said, “although I thought was going to teach 5th grade forever at Berlyn. My principal inspired me to take risks and so I moved on to a full-time release Teacher-on-Assignment position as a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assistance) Support Provider. After 5 years, I missed being with students and took a position as a Program Facilitator." Ultimately, she became the Assistant Principal and then Principal.
“I feel so blessed and am so grateful for this great opportunity to join the FUSD team and lead the Locust Lion family,” said Mrs. Colon. “I’m eager to get started building relationships and collaborating to create a school where students, staff and parents are beating down the doors to get in!”
“This is always my favorite thing to share because it kinda shocks people,” said Mrs. Colon. “My husband and I were engaged on our first date, married 3 months later, and have now been married for 10 years!”
