Online Learning Program

Our current Online Learning Program is a long-term independent study program, formerly known as VLP. This program does not include live, synchronous instruction. Instead, students complete coursework independently through Edmentum, while teachers provide limited but targeted guidance and feedback asynchronously.

This program is designed for students who are ready to take ownership of their learning and can thrive with flexibility and self-direction.

Before requesting Online Learning for your student, please consider the following eligibility criteria for acceptance:
  • Can work independently with minimal assistance.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation and consistent follow-through.
  • Has basic grade-level reading and writing skills to navigate online content.
  • Has reliable access to a device and internet.
  • Can manage time effectively and meet weekly deadlines.
  • Does not require frequent behavioral or academic prompting.
  • Has parent/guardian support to monitor progress and engagement.
Important Considerations

To ensure students remain on track and experience success, please keep the following in mind:

  • Independent Study is not for everyone. Students who require frequent prompting, direct instruction, or ongoing interventions typically do not thrive in a long-term independent study setting.
    • These students may face challenges such as falling behind in credits or experiencing declines in engagement.
  • Our shared goal is to place students in an environment where they are best positioned to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. 

Effective 2026/2027, all online students will be enrolled as follows rather than their school of residence. This change will help streamline processes related to student accountability and budgeting, allowing FUSD to better support the online learning program.

Students who are currently enrolling or new to the online program and interested in athletics will have the opportunity to try out for sports offered at A.B. Miller High School. Current online students who have been participating in athletics at their school of residence will be allowed to continue at their current school. If parents choose to return their child to in-person learning, the student may return to their school of residence.

The applications for Fall 2026 are open! Here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin your Online Learning Program Application/Requests:

  • Start early!
  • Remember the deadlines.
  • Plan ahead by knowing the dates and deadlines. All applications must be received BEFORE the deadlines.
  • All deadlines are 11:59 pm (Pacific Time) on the day of the deadline.

 **Returning applicants who meet the priority deadline will still be considered with all other applicants who apply by the final deadline and will not receive a decision any earlier. However, those who meet the priority deadline will receive extra consideration in the decision-making process. In other words, meeting the priority deadline will factor in our complete review. 
 
Important Reminder: Students are expected to continue attending their current school until placement in the Online Learning Program has been officially approved.

GRADES K-8 | Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Why is FUSD making changes for elementary students? This change helps streamline student accountability, scheduling, and budgeting, allowing FUSD to better support the online program.
  2. Will my child still be in the online program? Yes. Your child will continue in the online program; however, elementary students will be enrolled under Chaparral Academy of Technology for administrative purposes.
  3. Does this change apply to middle school students? No. Middle school students (grades 6–8) will continue to be connected to their school of residence.
  4. Can my child return to in-person learning? Yes. Families may choose to withdraw from the online program and enroll their child at their school of residence at any time.
  5. Can my child attend Chaparral Academy of Technology in person? Yes. If you are interested, FUSD will work with you to complete the necessary transfer process.
  6. Who do I contact if I have questions? You may contact the online program administration at Chaparral Academy of Technology for support with scheduling, enrollment, or program-related questions.

  1. Will my child still be enrolled in their home school? No. Beginning in 2026–2027, online high school students will be enrolled at A.B. Miller High School for administrative purposes.
  2. Can my child return to their home school for in-person learning? Yes. Families may choose to withdraw from the online program and enroll their child at their school of residence at any time.
  3. Will this change impact my child’s classes or teachers? No. Your child will continue in the online program, but A.B. Miller High School administration will oversee scheduling and support services.
  4. How will this affect athletics? New online students may try out for sports at A.B. Miller High School . Current online students who already participate in athletics at their home school may continue at their current school.
  5. Who do I contact for support or questions? A.B. Miller High School administration will serve as the primary point of contact for scheduling, support, and program-related questions.
  6. Why is FUSD making this change? This adjustment helps streamline student accountability, scheduling, and budgeting processes, allowing FUSD to better support and strengthen the online learning program.
