Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) Trainee Practicum Program

Program Overview

The Fontana Unified School District MFT Trainee Practicum Program provides graduate students with hands-on clinical experience in youth and family mental health. Trainees will have the opportunity to deliver therapeutic services to K-12 students identified as at-risk, as well as their families, through school-based prevention and intervention support. The program emphasizes a collaborative and supportive learning environment where trainees develop essential clinical skills, gain experience working with diverse populations, and build effective, ethical relationships with clients, caregivers, and school staff.

Trainees will complete an 11-month placement (August–June) at a minimum two school sites within the district. Program training includes conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and completing progress notes in accordance with Medi-Cal documentation standards. Trainees are expected to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week, which includes:

  • 10 client hours on average
  • 1 hour of individual supervision
  • 2 hours of group supervision every Wednesday afternoon

To be considered, applicants must meet the weekly and annual time requirements of the program. Upon successful completion of the practicum hours and graduation from their university program, trainees will qualify for registration as an MFT Associate to continue accumulating hours toward licensure in California.
