ELPAC
The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the state’s required test that measures how well students whose primary language is not English are developing their English skills. The results help schools identify the support students may need to succeed in the classroom and to fully access the curriculum. Each year, the ELPAC also shows how much progress English Learners are making in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These scores help determine when a student is ready to be reclassified as proficient in English, an important milestone for academic success.

Reclassification
Reclassification is an important milestone for English Learners.
Reclassification is when a student demonstrates well developed English skills to succeed in core academic content classes without extra language support (I-ELD/D-ELD). A reclassified student demonstrates being Fluent English Proficient and receives recognition of their progress and hard work.
Why this matters for your child:
- It opens more opportunities. Students can fully participate in all academic programs and classes.
- It supports long‑term success. Students who reach this milestone tend to do well academically over time.
- It ensures students get support only as long as they truly need it. Reclassification ensures students receive support for as long as it is helpful—and no longer
- It recognizes the hard work and progress of multilingual students. It acknowledges students’ growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English, and celebrates their readiness to thrive in mainstream academic settings.
Reclassification honors the dedication and achievement of multilingual learners. Most importantly, it shows your child is ready for the next step—and we’re here to support them every step of the way!
