Answer: A Work Permit is a verification of your age, birth date, enrollment, and attendance in school that you are required by California Labor Laws to provide to your employer. California State Law requires that a minor be enrolled and attending full-time school before a Work Permit can be issued.  If the minor drops out or otherwise does not attend school, the Work Permit automatically becomes null and void.  If the employer continues to work the youth, the employer is in violation of the State Law.

Answer: All minors under the age of 18 that are employed, except those who are high school graduates or students who have been awarded certificates of proficiency.

Answer: Before the work permit is approved and issued it will be reviewed to ensure that the place of employment meets the proper work environment for minors. The work permit also verifies the minor’s age for the employer and enables the employer to comply with State and Federal Labor Laws. Some of these are summarized on the Work Permit.

Answer: The schools require a student to maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A. and attend school regularly (per State guidelines); attendance will be checked every grading period.

• Minors that are 14 to 15 years old can work up to 18 hours while school is in session.
• Minor that are 16 to 17 years old can work up to 24 hours while school is in session.

Answer: A work permit is valid for the school year and summer that it was issuance, plus 5 days into the next school year. After this period, it must be renewed.

Answer: You are allowed to have more than one employer; however, the hours you are allowed to work based on your age will be split between your two employers.

Answer:  If you leave the employer of the work permit that you were issued for and you are hired by another employer, you must apply for another work permit. You must notify the work permit office who will cancel your original work permit before issuing a work permit for your new employer once a work permit application has been received.

Answer: Once a work permit application is received by e-mail to the Work Permit Office it can take up to 3 to 5 days to process. The process entails reviewing the work permit application for approval and issuing a work permit. When the work permit is issued it will be sent directly to the student’s district e-mail.
