Open to dialogue with the community portion included the following comments and discussions:
Q: We appreciate that the students are supported in exercising their rights, but also what is the district doing to keep student safe from I.C.E.?
A: Our district has a very strict policy that our administration is aware of. The district does not allow I.C.E. on campus, and site admin know not to do anything until the Superintendent arrives to confirm if there is a judicial warrant, signed by a judge permitting them legal access to a student or employee. Without the proper documentation, they will not be allowed on campus. Additionally, the district works closely with SBCSS for county resources available, and these resources are available on our website.
Q: How are kids leaving campuses for middle of the day protests?
A: The district can’t lock kids in. Due to fire code, there needs to be egress on campus, meaning a way for students to exit. We cannot physically keep them from leaving campus if they choose to. Our best course of action is to work proactively with parents to ensure students are not leaving without permission. Also, we do allow for safe and peaceful opportunities for students to express themselves on campus or after school hours. The district is advocating for parents to be aware of what their students are doing and work with the district to reinforce the importance of staying on campus during school hours. We want to keep our students safe.
Q: What is Centegix and what schools were using this tool for the pilot program? How does it work?
A: The program has been piloted at four schools this year: A.B. Miller, Almeria MS, Sierra Lakes Elementary and Canyon Crest Elementary. All staff on campus from the custodial crew to the front office staff and teachers use it. They press the button on the badge and according to the number of times the button is pressed, either front office staff is alerted to a lower level emergency, or the police and fire department are notified if it is a higher level emergency. This shortens the response time that someone is able to get to the person in need.
Q: How do the boundary changes affect which students can ride the bus?
A: If you live within the mileage boundaries, you will continue receiving bus transportation. If you request an intra-district transfer to another school, we do not offer bus transportation, but all students in our district can ride the Omni-trans buses for free.
Q: How do we ensure all schools are equally benefitting from the Measure I Bond? How do we bring more programs and resources to Citrus ES?
A: For the bond, some schools need more work and modernization than others. Those schools may receive more facilities upgrades. However, all schools will receive some updates. Resources are being spread out equitably based on facilities need. Funding for programs is provided to sites based on the students they serve. Example: If 85% of the students are low SES and 65% are Els, that school would qualify for more based on need.
Q: Comments from a parent who's student attends Date Elementary:
- Thank you for the district’s position regarding the protest today, as it is important that leadership has a good mindset in supporting the students.
- Thank you to the School Board for listening.
- It was great to see the Superintendent attending Coffee w/ the Principal – I don’t recall this happening in the last 10 years
- Let’s get Centegix into all the schools
- Regarding the Home Language Survey, feel that it is more of a punishment than a survey. Once you’re in it, students have a difficult time getting out of it. Just because we list that Spanish is spoken in the home doesn’t mean that is the only language our students know. The district needs to look into it and figure ways of how students can get out of it.
Superintendent Inbody stated that the Home Language Survey is how the district collects data; however, it will be worth looking into.
Q: Is the contact information online correct for Board members? Most numbers I have called say that voicemail is not set up. I reached out to my rep and I’m still waiting for an email response three weeks later.
A: Board Vice President Serna apologized and stated that he does not always check his FUSD email unless it is a few days prior to a Board meeting. The district will look into the information noted online to ensure phone numbers are accurate.
Q: For students attending the I.B. program at JHHS, 9th graders have been provided transportation, but we were told that it would not be provided in 10th grade. These are students who graduated from Southridge and don’t live in Jurupa Hills’ boundaries, but who want to continue in the I.B. program. Will transportation still be revoked?
A: The district will look into that to learn a bit more, as we do not recall transportation being revoked. There are cohort areas where students can be dropped off at another school and the bus can pick them up from there and take them to JHHS. Also, the district has a partnership with Omnitrans for anyone 0-18 years of age. All students need to do is show their student I.D. and can ride the bus anywhere Omnitrans runs.
Q: Are there plans to have a “Come Meet Us” for the new Oak Grove Preparatory School? This would help parents help a decision.
A: Yes, the district has held Town Hall meetings with targeted groups at Wayne Ruble and Sierra Lakes. We are working on a date for another meeting open to anyone who wants to learn more. A community meeting will be scheduled and will be advertised via ParentSquare and our website.
Q: Are messages posted on ParentSquare routed to email also?
A: Parents are able to choose the modes of delivery they want to receive. Messages are delivered via email, text, or through the APP notification. Parents can also set the frequency of incoming messages. The school site or the FACE department can assist with setting your preferences.
Q: Regarding the attendance policy: If a student receives one (1) tardy, they’re no longer eligible for perfect attendance. They can make up an absence, but not a tardy, and policies are different from site to site. Life happens sometimes, and to punish a child for 1 tardy is discouraging.
A: Yes, each site handles their attendance recognition policy differently. We will work with Student Services to see if there can be some consistency made regarding tardies.
Q: There is Saturday School for students with disabilities but there are no accommodations to help students when they do go. How are these students being taken care of? Is there anyone trained to help them feel comfortable and included?
A: If a student receives accommodations in SDC, there are hubs at the sites, as it is not just about making up the absence, but making up for lost learning. The district equips Saturday School with aides for students who receive accommodations through their special day class. We will be confirming with Student Services to make sure proper support is given.
Q: My student attended Saturday School last week and it did not reflect on his transcript. The absence was not cleared, so no perfect attendance. The district still gets the money but he didn’t get his absence cleared. Shouldn't the absence be cleared if he makes it up?
A: The teacher taking attendance and is able to update the system. However, this is that situation where the site may have a specific policy for recognition. We will need to look into that.
Comment Cards that were received included the following questions:
Q: Please review the policy for excused absences. If a student has a medical note excusing them from school, this should not count against them. Also a student with 1 tardy should not be punished or not eligible for perfect attendance for the year. It is discouraging.
A; We have asked our Student Services team to look into the policy and work with school sites to consider a more standard approach to attendance recognitions.
