    Department Overview:

The Alternative Education Department oversees three Alternative Education Programs currently offered by the Fontana Unified School District, Independent Study, Home Hospital/Instruction, and the Alternative Learning Center.

The Alternative Education Coordinator is also the 504 Administrative Designee for the Fontana Unified School District.

    Short-term Independent Study Program:

Independent Study is a program that allows each student in our district (according to FUSD Board Policy) one, 3 to 14-day situation of Independent Study per school year.  Each student/family may request a one-time situation that would allow a student to be away from school for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days for any reason.  The requirements for this program include acceptable attendance, grades, behavior and approval from the school administrator.

    Home Hospital/Instruction Program:

Home Hospital/Instruction is a program that is offered to a student who has a medical reason and an approved doctor’s note/reason for not being able to attend school.  A student on an IEP is eligible for Home Instruction if the IEP Team decides it is a proper placement according to the Offer of a Free and Appropriate Education.

Once a student is approved for Home Hospital, services will be provided for 1 hour per day.  Each student will be able to meet with a teacher at his/her home for support during the Home Hospital/Instruction duration.

Home Hospital/Instruction services will continue as-long-as the doctor’s note prescribes or the IEP Team determines.
