2021-22 School Year Wrap

Fohi Athletics returned to full operations in the 2021-22 school year with a number of excellent performances from our programs. Our teams brought home a CIF Championship, six league titles, 12 playoff appearances, and 17 varsity programs  being named as CIF-SS Honor Roll Teams. All of this after spending over a year in pandemic-related shutdown. Our coaches and athletes put in a great deal of work and the results showed.

The headline was that our Boys Basketball team brought home the Steelers' first CIF Championship in 27 years. The program had not even earned a playoff berth since the mid-2000s. However, new head coach Mel Wilkins helped our young men find their confidence and molded them into champions. Led by Division 5A Player of the Year -- Joshua Okolugbo -- and All-CIF teammates Sergio Avalos and Esteban Perez, Fohi's squad put themselves back on the map with a 27-6 season that saw them dominate the Skylie League (7-1) and go all the way to the CIF Regional Semifinals.

Joining the Boys Basketball team as league champs are Girls Basketball, Boys Water Polo, Girls Water Polo, Girls Swim, and Boys Volleyball. We also had seven other programs send teams or individuals to CIF-SS playoff competition as well: Girls Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Boys Wrestling, Girls Wrestling, Boys Track & Field, Girls Track & Field, and Boys Swim. Girls Basketball and Boys Water Polo reached as far as the quarterfinals. We also had a Boys Swim athlete (John Zubiate) reach the Division 4 final heat in 2 events and the boys relay team made the final heat as well in 2 events.

Last, but certainly not least, 17 of our 19 varsity programs were named CIF-SS Honor Roll teams. This means that those programs had a Team GPA of over 3.0. Even more exciting, the two programs that weren't honored were still above 2.8. Congrats to Fohi Athletics for fulfilling the standards of both parts of the "student-athlete" title.

Congrats to all of these programs in reaping the rewards of their hard work. Now it is on to the next school year to see if the 2022-23 season can live up to that example.
