Football Returns to CIF-SS Playoff Action After a 19-year Hiatus
The Steelers Football program -- under the guidance of 2nd-year Head Coach Eric Gonzales -- persevered through a tough preseason to earn 3rd place in the Skyline League and a spot in the CIF-SS Division 14 playoffs. Hosting Steeler Stadium's first Steelers playoff game since 1997, they dominated Savanna HS of Anaheim and earning a berth in the quarterfinals. They came up four points short in a valiant comeback against Bassett HS of La Puente looking to get a shot at the semifinals.
Regardless, the upstart Steelers got a taste of success and will now have to show they can sustain it. We will lose 1st Team All-League performers in QB Andrew Urciel, RB/WR/LB Xzavier Todd, and DL/OL Alexis Moreno, and Honorable Mention RB/LB Frankie Rodriguez. However, we will have plenty of returners to try and improve on the foundations built this season.
Coach Gonzales and his staff will have some talented returners in All-League underclassmen WR/DB Akari Augustine (Fr), WR/DB/RB Rashawn Williams (So), and S Ritchie Rivera (Jr). Numerous other major contributors to this season's success will spend their offseason getting bigger, faster, and stronger in order to fulfill the promise that this season has set before us.
